Biography
Freddy is a current PhD student researching transgender people’s navigation of healthcare pathways. This was made possible with funding from the North West Social Science Doctoral Training Program, a ESRC funded training programme.
Freddy previously did a Masters in Gender Studies (MRes) at the University of Chester focusing on transgender people’s engagement in domestic labour using a feminist epistemology. He also did his undergraduate degree at Durham University in Sociology, with the final thesis using scrapbooking to explore transgender people’s clothing within the workplace.
In addition to his PhD, Freddy is also currently conducting the Trans Lives Survey for TransActual, one of the largest surveys of transgender people and their experiences in the UK to date. Freddy also works with charities, focusing on their provision for transgender people including Student Minds, and British Universities and College Sport.
Research
Freddy’s research interests focus on improving life for transgender people in the UK. Currently, Freddy is working within Science and Technology Studies (STS) exploring meaning making within transition, and navigation of transition pathways.
Freddy is also interested in alternative methods of elicitation, using scrapbooking in his undergraduate thesis. As part of his PhD, he will be asking participants to create fabric squares to describe their lived experiences and emotions as people accessing gender affirming care, uniting the squares into a unified quilt.
