Honorary appointment set to further dialogue on colonial and racial justice

Dr Leon Moosavi of the School of Law and Social Justice has been appointed as a Research Fellow at a prestigious university in South Africa. Dr Moosavi has secured an affiliation with Stellenbosch University’s Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology. This partnership is set to facilitate research collaboration and to enhance international academic exchange.

Throughout the course of the appointment, Dr Moosavi plans to collaborate with colleagues at Stellenbosh University on research relating to the legacy of colonialism and contemporary racial justice.

The collaboration with Stellenbosch University is set to involve joint research efforts with prominent South African academics. One of the colleagues that Dr Moosavi plans to collaborate with, Dr Shaheed Tayob, a Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology, said: “As a Department we are excited by Dr Moosavi’s theoretical reflections on intellectual decolonisation, an urgent matter which occupies many of our students, and which is a promising avenue of further research in South Africa”.

Dr Moosavi has also been welcomed by Professor Anthony Leysens, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University, who remarked: “We are delighted to welcome Dr Moosavi to our Faculty. His research on issues such as decoloniality fit in perfectly with what we are looking at within the context of a university engaged with transformation in the Global South.”

Dr Leon Moosavi, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Social Policy, and Criminology, commented: "South African academics and activists have been at the forefront of furthering global understanding about racism, coloniality, and decolonisation and I am looking forward to further exploring these issues as part of this appointment".  He also expressed hope for future student and staff exchanges between the University of Liverpool and Stellenbosch University.

The appointment reflects a shared global commitment to tackling complex social issues and furthering dialogue on colonial and racial justice.
