Researchers visit School of Law and Social Justice as part of partnership with Sumy State University, Ukraine
University of Liverpool’s School of Law and Social Justice hosts researchers from Ukraine’s Sumy State University as part of the UK-Ukraine Twinning Scheme, an ongoing partnership facilitated by Universities UK. This partnership exemplifies the power of education to unite people and share knowledge.
During their visit, six Ukrainian researchers will engage in a range of collaborative research projects with School of Law and Social Justice academics:
- Olena Tymoshenko, PhD candidate, will conduct research into the ‘organizational and legal regulation of object of intellectual property rights created by AI’. Hosted by Dr Sabine Jacques, an intellectual property (IP) law expert, Olena’s research navigates the emerging field of AI and IP law.
- Hosted by Professor Michael Dougan, Dr Anna Slavko, an Associate Professor and Chair of International, European, and Comparative Law will collaborate on shared expertise in public administration.
- Dr Vladyslava Zavhorodnia, Associate Professor and Head of the International, European, and Comparative Law Department at Sumy State University, will also collaborate with host, Professor Michael Dougan, on shared expertise in European law and public administration regulation.
- Alina Rassokhina, PhD candidate, will explore the legal frameworks of online and social media regulation, in collaboration with hosts, Professor Kanstantsin Dzehtsiarou and Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas.
- Katerryna Zaika, PhD candidate, will be researching Ukraine’s bankruptcy regulations, with the aim of improving legislative practices and outcomes in this area. Host, Dr John Tribe, is supporting her research throughout the visit.
- Nadiia Schcherbak, also a PhD candidate, has a dedicated interest in criminal law, gender equality, and combating gender violence. The research will be supported by host, Dr Áine Clancy, throughout her stay.
Speaking of the partnership, Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas, Dean of the School of Law and Social Justice, shared:

As a result of this program, we have been able to explore new research opportunities, co-supervision of PhD students, and the creation of programs that offer mutual benefits for both UK and Ukrainian societies. This exchange will provide practical support to ensure continuity in education and research at Sumy State University, fostering academic excellence and sharing resources through collaborative initiatives such as this one.”

“I am really enjoying my time in Liverpool, and I am delighted to be part of the programme. This is not my first time in Liverpool, as I attended the Second Liverpool Summer School in the Law of the Council of Europe this Summer. It was an incredible experience and a very busy 2 weeks. I'm very happy to be back! Liverpool is a very inspiring city.”
