New MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice launches for 2025/26

The School of Law and Social Justice is thrilled to announce the launch of its new Master of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice, available for the 2025/26 academic year.

This dynamic new programme invites students to immerse themselves in critical discussions surrounding crime, justice, inequality and social divisions, equipping them with the essential skills needed for impactful careers in policy, criminal justice and related fields.

Based within the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology, this globally focused MA critically examines the complex intersections of crime, justice and power in an ever-changing world. With core modules such as Thinking Criminologically and Beyond Criminal Justice, students will examine key issues like inequality, social divisions and international responses to crime, all while fostering a strong sense of social justice.

Dr William Shankley, PGT Director for the Department on Sociology, Sociology and Social Policy said: “We’re really excited to launch the new MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice. This programme is all about equipping students with the critical thinking and skills needed to tackle some of the most challenging issues in crime and justice today. It offers a chance to explore the complexities of criminal justice on a global scale, while also allowing students to shape their studies around what interests them most. Our aim is to inspire a new generation of criminologists who are ready to make a real difference in society.”

Designed for students seeking adaptable, impactful career paths, this MA allows for a personalised academic experience. Optional modules—including Gender-Based Violence and Criminal Justice and Migration, Trafficking and Modern Slavery—allows students to focus on areas most relevant to their interests and career goals, fostering expertise in critical contemporary issues.

Students will also have the opportunity to gain real-world experience through industry placements and impactful research projects, such as collaboration with the Interchange charity to drive positive change in local communities.

Applications for the MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice are now open, with a September 2025 start.
