School of Law and Social Justice appoints Global Justice Chairs
Four world-leading scholars have been appointed across the Liverpool Law School and Department of Sociology, Social Policy, and Criminology.
The appointments bring extensive experience in legal matters, human rights, and international affairs, enabling them to provide strategic leadership in addressing complex issues. The appointments will enhance the offering of the School of Law and Social Justice and inform collaborative and inclusive approaches to addressing systemic inequalities worldwide.
Professor Elspeth Guild, Professor Didier Bigo, Professor Mark Sidel, and Professor Catrien Bijleveld have been appointed as the School of Law and Social Justice’s Chairs in Global Justice.
Professor Elspeth Guild is Legal Counsel for the London-based law firm, Kingsley Napley, a Jean Monnet Professor ad personam in law at Queen Mary University of London, and Emerita Professor at Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands. She regularly advises EU institutions on migration and asylum related matters.
Speaking of the appointment, Professor Elspeth Guild said:
“This is a wonderful opportunity for me to participate in a transdisciplinary school where we can put into practice research across disciplines rather than in the usual silos of which my primary discipline, law, is particularly fond. I am looking forward to working with the excellent colleagues at the School many of whom I know only by reputation so far.”
Professor Didier Bigo is Research Professor of War Studies at King’s College London and Emeritus Professor at Sciences Po Paris. He is also Director of the Centre d’Etudes sur les Conflits, la Liberté, la Sécurité CECLS, Co-editor of the Journal in French Cultures et Conflits L’Harmattan-CECLS, as well as Co-Editor of Political Anthropological Research on International Social Sciences (PARISS).
Professor Mark Sidel is a Doyle-Bascom Professor of Law and Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served for a number of years in senior program positions with the Ford Foundation in Beijing, Bangkok, Hanoi, and New Delhi, and has consulted widely with foundations, international activist and non-governmental organisations; UN and donor agencies; and academic institutions.
Professor Mark Sidel shared: “I’m delighted to join colleagues at the School of Law and Social Justice, where I’ve long had close academic ties with SLSJ’s exceptional group of charity law scholars. I look forward to continuing to work with charity law colleagues and with colleagues in human rights, constitutional law, and other fields.”
Professor Catrien Bijleveld is a Senior Researcher at the National Science Foundation Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement, as well as a Professor of Research Methods in Empirical Legal Studies and Criminology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. She is also involved in projects on media, ageing societies, and business models, in partnership with Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy.

These appointments build upon the University’s new strategic plan, Strategy 2031, as the School of Law and Social Justice places increased emphasis on globalisation in both teaching and research activity.
