The University of Liverpool’s Law Clinic recently concluded its two summer projects, offering students from the Liverpool Law School invaluable hands-on experience in handling family law, special educational needs (SEN) and immigration cases. Under the guidance of in-house solicitors, undergraduate students had the opportunity to work directly with clients, enhancing their practical legal skills.

Students involved in the immigration project spent nine days over two weeks acquiring key legal skills. They developed research and writing skills, working in teams on applications for leave to remain, for settlement as a stateless person or dependent, to register children as British and fee waivers (the registration fees are otherwise £1214 per child). They attended client interviews, drafted advice letters and legal representations, and prepared evidence for submission. Throughout, supervising solicitors provided immediate feedback and continuous guidance.

Law and Criminology student Chloe Minkley said: "This experience gave me great first-hand experience working directly with clients and deepened my understanding of Immigration Law. This opportunity came with exceptional support from my supervisors and the chance to connect with other students who shared similar career aspects. The experience has strengthened my commitment to working towards achieving my degree and given me a great insight into what life after University would be like working as a solicitor."

In the SEN and family law project, students spent two weeks immersed in each area. They attended client appointments, drafted detailed attendance notes and prepared advice letters under close supervision. Additionally, students benefited from weekly talks delivered by local solicitors and the careers team. They also engaged in reflective presentations, exploring issues of access to justice from their clients' perspectives.

The Law Clinic offers an excellent opportunity for students to establish connections and gain practical experience, enhancing their appeal to prospective employers in the legal field. This project has also proven highly effective in swiftly advancing cases initiated during academic modules.

Law student Paula Osemhanre said: "The Law Clinic project gives you a taste of what working in law can feel like. It humanises people and encourages you to contribute (to the best of your ability) to positively impact lives. Overall, new skills are learned, and it may provide the nudge needed to continue on your law journey!".
