School of Law and Social Justice visit to Taiwan strengthens international research and student opportunities
Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas, Dean of the School of Law and Social Justice, visited Taiwan last week (13-18 June), as a guest of the Judges Academy, Taiwan. The visit aimed to build upon existing research and training cooperation in Taiwan, following the School of Law and Social Justice’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in November 2022.
The existing agreement is with the Judges Academy in Taiwan, to maintain and develop meaningful research and training links, to enhance the international reputation and visibility of the School of Law and Social Justice. The partnership has provided unique opportunities for knowledge exchange and collaboration so far, with the School of Law and Social Justice hosting judges from the Judges’ Academy as guest researchers.
Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas reciprocated during his visit, presenting on ‘Lessons from EU efforts to legislate on digital evidence’, in a lecture to the Academy, attended by Judges, practitioners, and prosecutors. Valsamis was also invited for an audience with the Judges of the Constitutional Court of Taiwan to discuss judicial dialogue and mutual learning across the judiciaries.

To further expand on the offering to our students in Liverpool, meetings were organised with delegates from the highest ranking law schools, according to Times Higher Education, in Taiwan to enter into discussions on research and student exchange opportunities. The higher education institutions involved were the National Taiwan University, National Chengchi University (NCCU), and the National Taipei University.

This visit is just one of the ways we are supporting our continued commitment to providing leading expertise and opportunity to students and scholars, through internationalisation.
Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas, Dean of the School of Law and Social Justice, said:
“We are delighted to take forward our cooperation with the Judges Academy, and to further our areas of collaboration as we develop this partnership. It was an honour to meet with leaders of the Taiwanese Judiciary, and with leading higher education institutions in Taiwan. We’re eager to advance our international partnerships in the field of law and social justice, and are delighted with the outcomes of this visit.”
