Today (8th March) marks International Women's Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, with the theme focusing on #ChooseToChallenge. This year’s blog provides us with an opportunity to reflect on all that has happened in the previous year, and how our contributors have dealt with and responded to the challenges presented to them, and other women, throughout the pandemic.

Responding to the Shadow Pandemic
As we look towards International Women's Day on 8th March, we take a look at the research being undertaken by Prof Sandra Walklate, Prof Barry Godfrey and Dr Jane Richardson looking at the impacts that the pandemic has had since March 2020 on domestic abuse towards women. This years theme of #ChooseToChallenge ties in with their research project, The Shadow Pandemic and how they are challenging the impacts of the pandemic to help the women of domestic abuse.

Carol received funding from the BVA Animal Welfare Foundation for a short research project on consultations involving euthanasia.

Wrong Target for the Parliamentary Inquiry on Fair Business Banking
In looking at the impacts of both Brexit and the current pandemic on businesses, insolvency issues are at the fore for many. With this in mind, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Fair Business Banking have recently launched an inquiry into the relationship between banks and insolvency practitioners. In this blog, John Tribe, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law, argues that they should re-focus their inquiry and instead focus their investigations on the corrosive dominance of secured creditors in insolvency.

Privy Council Hearings on Same-Sex Marriage in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands
This LGBT history month, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC) is hearing two historic cases relating to same-sex marriage from the British Overseas Territories of Bermuda (Attorney General for Bermuda v. Ferguson and Others, JCPC 2019/0077, 3rd and 4th February) and the Cayman Islands (Day and Another v. The Government of the Cayman Islands and Another, JCPC 2020/0033, 23rd and 24th February). While both cases involve same-sex marriage, these cases are fundamentally different in terms of the constitutional provisions they are based on and the legal context in which they arise.
