Faculty Staff take on Anfield Abseil Challenge for charity
A group of determined staff members from the Faculty Office teams and FMT took on the daunting Anfield Abseil, scaling the heights of Liverpool FC’s iconic main stand before descending 100 feet back to the ground, all in support of The Owen McVeigh Foundation.
The team included Joe Sweeney, the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (APVC) for Education; Vicki Reynolds, Head of Compliance and Operations; Laura O’Keefe, Research Environment & REF Manager; Carla McGivern, Executive Assistant to the Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Faculty Director of Operations; Tracy Simms, Compliance and Operations Officer; and Hayley Devonport, Compliance and Operations Administrator.
All participants covered their own costs, ensuring that every penny raised would directly benefit The Owen McVeigh Foundation, the LivtoGive charity selected by staff from across the Faculty as the focus of their fundraising for 2024.
Joe Sweeney said, "This was an incredible experience for all of us, not just in terms of the adrenaline rush but in knowing that our efforts will make a real difference to the lives of children in our community."
The Anfield Abseil, which has become a popular activity among thrill-seekers and charity supporters alike, provided a perfect backdrop for the group’s fundraising efforts. With the famous stadium as their stage, the faculty members tackled the challenge with a mix of excitement and nerves, cheered on by colleagues, friends, and family members.
The Owen McVeigh Foundation, named in memory of a young Liverpool fan who tragically passed away from leukaemia, offers memorable experiences and financial support to families dealing with childhood cancer. The funds raised from today’s event will contribute to the foundation’s ongoing work, helping to bring joy and comfort to children during their most challenging times.
Vicki Reynolds, reflecting on the experience, added, "It was a mixture of fear and exhilaration, but knowing we were doing this for such a worthy cause kept me going. I’m thrilled to have been able to support The Owen McVeigh Foundation in this way."
Ongoing Faculty fundraising
The Anfield Abseil was a big success and you can still support the bravery of the team by donating via the JustGiving page. Every contribution, no matter the size, goes directly to The Owen McVeigh Foundation to provide vital support to children and families affected by cancer.
In addition to today’s abseil, the Faculty has several other fundraising activities planned, including a Staff Sports Day on Wednesday 11 September. This event promises to be a fun-filled day of friendly competition, bringing together staff from across the faculty in support of the same worthy cause. Participants and spectators alike are invited to get involved, whether by competing, wearing charity colours, or making a donation.
