About the session
Many universities are signatories of DORA (the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment). This means that they embed fair principles into research evaluation.
This workshop will introduce the responsible use of metrics for addressing issues of justice and equity, and will also focus on particular actions postdocs could take and the broader concept of responsible research assessment.
Who is it for?
- Early Career Researchers (including Postdocs)
- Mid-Career Researchers
- Managers of Researchers
- Research-related Professional Services Staff (including research support administrators, researcher developers and career development professionals).
Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will:
- Understand what DORA is
- Understand how DORA could contribute to addressing issues of equity and justice in universities
- Be able to better align their research goals with DORA principles.

Levi Gahman, Lecturer (Global Challenges) at University of Liverpool
Levi's areas of focus include anti-colonial praxis, environmental defence, gender justice, and political education, which coincide with efforts he is engaged in related to democratising knowledge and ensuring that research is relevant to those with whom he collaborates. Broadly, his work is oriented towards resolving alienation, exploitation, and ecological destruction, as well as making sure that research is put in the service of both material and psycho-spiritual wellbeing. Prior to joining the Power, Space, & Cultural Change unit, Levi lived in the Caribbean and Central America for half a decade where he focused on development justice, emancipatory politics, and social change. He now works alongside and writes with grassroots social movements and community organisers who are fighting for land and self-determination. Levi is also author of Land, God, and Guns: Settler Colonialism and Masculinity (Zed Scholar) and former managing editor of the open access journal ACME: An International Journal for Critical Geographies.
Stephen Curry: Assistant Provost for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Imperial College London
Prof Curry’s research and teaching have long been combined with strong interests the wider role of science in society. He is active in public engagement, having made and presented a number of science videos. He has keen interests in science policy, particularly in R&D funding, in research evaluation (and the use and mis-use of metrics), and in scholarly publication. He is Chair of the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA). He has written extensively about science and the scientific life in the Guardian and on his Reciprocal Space blog, and can be found on Twitter as @Stephen_Curry.
