Professor Welsch Highlights Collaborative Research at UKRO EU MSCA Meeting
On June 26, 2024, UKRO and UUKi, in collaboration with the European Commission is held a one-day in-person Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) event at University College London, showcasing the MSCA scheme and opportunities for researchers. Among the invited speakers was Professor Carsten P Welsch of the QUASAR Group, who shared his insights of researcher training through MSCA-funded networks and his previous role as chair of STFC’s Education Training and Careers Committee.
Professor Welsch's presentation focused on the success of no less than six MSCA networks he has initiated and coordinated over the years, including DITANET, LA³NET, and AVA, which have driven advancements in fields from beam diagnostics to antimatter research. He emphasized how these networks have provided early-stage researchers (ESRs) with international exposure, interdisciplinary collaboration, and training in essential scientific and complementary skills. This approach, he noted, not only enhances the employability of researchers but also prepares them to tackle complex global challenges.
Professor Welsch highlighted the importance of evolving PhD training to include cross-sector collaboration and skills development, moving beyond the traditional academic focus. By integrating these elements into his networks, he has ensured that all Fellows trained under him are well-equipped for diverse career paths.
The impact of this training was evident in the numerous success stories shared by him at the event. He pointed to the international success of spin-out companies and the recognition received by Fellows in his networks, underscoring the significant impact of MSCA funding on both individual careers and broader scientific advancements.
Professor Welsch also discussed the role of outreach and public engagement in extending the benefits of research beyond the academic community. His QUASAR Group’s efforts to engage with the public have inspired future generations and promoted a greater understanding of the science and technology of particle accelerators.
The event underscored the importance of MSCA in fostering international collaboration and nurturing scientific talent. Professor Welsch’s contributions highlighted the value of collaborative networks in driving innovation and preparing researchers for the challenges of tomorrow.
