Focus on Diversity - David Pavel Juárez López, Mexico
I am originally from Zacatecas, a state that is located in Northern-central Mexico. We are considered to be Northerners because our accent is 'strong'. Zacatecas is a semi-arid state, with rainfall for only three months a year, so rainy days are highly appreciated by eve-ryone, especially as you walk through the city centre and see the reflected lights of colonial buildings on the cobblestone streets. One of the things that I like about the UK is the rain! That light rain that allows you to walk without getting soaked, I understand that for some, this is a negative point, but for a young man who comes from a semi-arid climate it doesn’t matter at all.
As a student of the Cockcroft Institute, I have the opportunity to see the trees and ca-nals that surround it, this ecosystem and this type of landscape in Mexico is far from my home town, so having it here makes me appreciate it every day.
One of the things that I like most in the UK is the Pub culture. This place where all kinds of generations meet, and you can find everyone from college youth to senior citizens living in harmony and enjoying a good beer in their hand. A friend once defined it as "The common living room", and then told me about his analysis: it's a place where you do not have to pay for heating, you have different types of beer, and it is where all of your friends are, so why should you be at home? I like to enjoy a beer in my local pub, that custom and habit that the British have about the pub seems to me very cool and it is for the same reason that I have decided to adopt it.
British architecture is another thing that catches my attention, and being able to find such different architectural styles within a few steps of each other is amazing. Especially because of the Mexican architectural difference, styles like Stuart, Georgian, Neo Classical and Victorian, to name a few, highlight our attention for how different and unusual they are. I must confess that the first time I saw St. Pancras station, I was impressed to the point of admiring it for a couple of hours. When I go to London, it is a must-visit place to stop.
There are many things I enjoy in the UK that are different from things in Mexico, but I must value the things that are actually the same: having found good friends, being able to learn something new every day, enjoying the music and playing sport are some of the few things that make me enjoy living here.
Soy originario de Zacatecas, un estado que se encuentra en el centro norte geográfico de México, somos considerados del norte debido a que nuestro acento es ‘fuerte’. Zacatecas es un estado semiárido, la precipitación pluvial alcanza tres meses al año, por lo que los días lluviosos son sumamente apreciados por todos, sobre todo al caminar por el centro de la ciudad y ver las luces de los edificios coloniales reflejados en las calles empedradas. Una de la cosas que me gusta del Reino Unido es principalmente su lluvia, esa que te permite caminar sin terminar empapado, entiendo que para algunos esto es un punto negativo, pero para un joven que viene de un clima semi árido no presenta el más mínimo problema.
Como estudiante del Instituto Cockcroft tengo la oportunidad de ver los árboles y los canales que rodean a este mismo, este ecosistema y este tipo de paisajes en México se en-cuentra retirado de mi hogar, así que el tenerlo aquí me hace valorarlo día a día.
Una de las cosas que más me ha llamado la atención en el Reino Unido es la cultura del Pub; este lugar donde se reúnen todo tipo de generaciones, puedes encontrar desde jóve-nes de preparatoria hasta adultos mayores que conviven en armonía disfrutando de una bue-na cerveza en la mano. Un amigo alguna vez lo definió como “La sala común”, me comen-taba de su análisis: es un lugar en donde no tienes que pagar la calefacción, tienes diferentes tipos de cerveza y están todos tus amigos ¿por qué deberías de estar en tu casa? me pregun-taba. Me gusta disfrutar de una cerveza en un pub local, ese uso y costumbre que tienen los británicos acerca de la cultura del pub me parece muy propia y es por lo mismo que he de-cidido adoptarla.
La arquitectura británica es otra de las cosas que me llama mucho la atención, el poder encontrar diferentes estilos arquitectónicos a unos cuantos pasos de distancia es asombroso. Sobre todo por la diferencia arquitectónica que existe en México, diferentes estilos como Stuart, Georgian, Neo Classical y Victorian, por mencionar algunos, resaltan nuestra aten-ción por lo diferentes y poco comunes que llegan a ser. Debo confesar que la primera vez que vi la estación St. Pancras, me impresionó al grado de admirarla por un par de horas. Cuando voy a Londres, es una parada obligada el visitarle.
Existen muchas cosas que son diferentes a México, pero las que suelen ser las mismas son las que valoro; el haber encontrado buenos amigos, el poder aprender cada día algo nue-vo, el disfrutar de su música, son unas de las pocas cosas que me hacen disfrutar el vivir aquí.
