How to apply
To apply for a postgraduate research degree or project, you'll need to complete our online application form via the University of Liverpool Application Portal.
You should apply as early as possible if you're also applying for funding, or if you need to secure a UK visa. Visit the GOV.UK website to check if you need a UK visa.
1. Find a research degree or research project
Browse our research degrees and research projects. Find a route that matches your funding requirements and research interests.
2. Contact potential supervisors
It’s useful to contact potential supervisors before you make your application. This gives you the chance to discuss their availability and your proposed research. More importantly, it gives you the opportunity to decide if they’d be a good fit for you.
If supervisors aren't listed on the research degree page or research project page that interests you, you can find potential supervisors by browsing:
- Our people search
- Our supervisor search on FindaPhD
- Our staff’s research on GoogleScholar.
3. Prepare your application documents
You may need the following documents to complete your online application. You should read the application guidance for your chosen course/research opportunity carefully, as required documents may differ:
- A research proposal (this should cover the research you’d like to undertake)
- University transcripts and degree certificates to date
- Passport details (international applicants only)
- English language certificates (international applicants only)
- A personal statement
- A curriculum vitae (CV)
- Contact details for two proposed supervisors
- Names and contact details of two referees.
4. Apply
Finally, register and apply online. Please note: we don't list research projects in the online application portal. If you’re applying for a research project, your proposed supervisor(s) or the relevant administration team can tell you which programme you should complete your online application for. You can find contact details on the relevant project page.
- If wish to start your degree before September 2025, you should apply for admission term 2024/25
- If wish to start your degree after September 2025, you should apply for admission term 2025/26.
You'll receive an email acknowledgment once you've submitted your application. All submissions are considered thoroughly and carefully, so there may be a delay in receiving a decision on your application. If further documents are required in order for a decision to be made, the relevant postgraduate administration team will contact you via email.
