Working alongside your research degree
Part-time work is an increasingly essential part of student life, helping you to supplement your income and gain valuable professional skills and work experience.
Legally you're allowed to work up to 20 hours per week, though we recommend no more than 15. You should discuss the option of part-time work with your supervisor to ensure that your studies are always first priority.
Also, some funding bodies and research councils place stipulations on working while you study, so you'll need to check with your sponsor.
Help finding work
Our Careers and Employability Service is here to help you source job vacancies. This might be doing something completely different from your studies, or it could be an internal vacancy with the University. Your supervisor can help you find out what opportunities are available.
Become a part-time tutor
Our postgraduate research students occasionally supplement their main source of financial support through part-time tutoring through the University. Income from part-time tutoring is subject to limits set by the Research Councils or other funding sources.
Responsibilities may include:
- Teaching and demonstrating work in the departments (for up to 15 hours a week)
- Exam invigilation
- Administrative duties.
You can speak to your supervisor to find out what opportunities are available.
Become a residential adviser
As a postgraduate researcher, you may have the opportunity to work as a residential adviser. In this role, you'll provide support and guidance to our undergraduate students living in University accommodation. In return, we can offer you accommodation at a reduced rate as well as the opportunity to gain some valuable experience to benefit your future career and make a real difference within our student population.
International students
If you’re an international student, our Student Services team can give you advice on working while you study. Things work slightly differently for international students on a Student visa, but we can help you understand the options for work available to you. Our Careers and Employability Service offers bespoke guidance on finding and applying for jobs while studying in the UK.
