Research
Research Overview
My research focusses primarily on understanding the aetiology and prevention of suicide and related behaviours in people with adverse childhood experiences, severe mental health issues, or both. I also am particularly interested in investigating the mechanisms underlying resilience to suicide acts in people with childhood trauma and/or mental health problems, and in developing and evaluating digital and low-intensity interventions to improve the self-management and service management of vulnerable people with mental health conditions (PTSD, OCD, or history of self-harm/suicide) especially during dangerous points of the care pathway (e.g., while placed in waiting lists for treatment).
PhD Supervision Availability:
I am currently accepting PhD students who have an interest in various mental health conditions during childhood or adulthood, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, etc. Additionally, I welcome those who are interested in research related to suicide and/or self-harm prevention, as well as improving healthcare delivery in primary care settings.
Digital and Brief Interventions for Mental Health Problems
I am interested in co-developing acceptable and user-friendly mental health apps that will be freely available to people with mental health and self-management problems. I also am interested in co-designing culturally adapted versions of these apps to provide important information and support to culturally diverse groups (e.g., immigrants, other minorities residing in the UK).
Global Mental Health
I am interested in adapting evidence-based interventions to accommodate cultural differences and improve patient/client health outcomes.
Child and Adolescent Mental health
Children and adolescents are by nature more vulnerable to mental health problems, self-harm and suicide behaviours. There is an increased risk for those young people who are excluded by mainstream education, live in poverty, and have experienced other types of trauma early on in life. I am interested in co-developing and facilitating effective prevention interventions to support children and young people.
