The Development and Influence of Public Health Genomics

Posted on: 10 August 2022 in Posts

As part of a two year study of the development of public health geonomics, in collaboration with the PHG Foundation, a witness seminar was held at Wellcome London on 8 September 2021. The participants discussed factors that have led to the growth in this policy area in the UK since the 1960s, including the development of screening programmes, new genetic and genomic technologies; interactions between stakeholders such as clinical geneticists, population health experts, politicians and industry; the creation of specialist research units, consultation machinery and NHS services.

The second part of the seminar was held online on 15 November 2021 to focus on the international context, and continue discussion of how ethical, legal and social implications of genomic technology and services have been addressed.

A transcript of the event has now been published and is available here.

The report includes an introduction to the study, a list of participants and a full transcript of the discussions, contextualised with further references and sources.
