Dr Eduard Shantsila has been appointed as the new Head of the Department of Primary Care and Mental Health in the Institute of Population Health, succeeding Professor Fiona Rowe.
A GP with a background in cardiology, Eduard joined the University of Liverpool in 2021 as a clinical academic, combining research alongside working as a GP at Brownlow Health Partnership.
Eduard’s research focuses on novel approaches to prevent cardiovascular disease and the holistic care of people with cardiovascular pathology as well as promoting healthy ageing. He recently authored a review into the risk factors associated with atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that affects around 1.4 million people in the UK.
Dr Shantsila said: "I am excited about taking this role, linking the wonderful team within the Department, and look forward to working together to find better ways of addressing healthcare challenges and supporting future researchers and practitioners in their education journeys."
Professor Sally Sheard, Executive Dean of the Institute said: "Fiona has been an outstanding Head of Department and steered the Department through some challenging times. I wish her every success with her growing research portfolio.
"I am delighted that Eduard has been appointed to this role and look forward to working with him as the Department continues to build upon the achievements of Fiona’s tenure."
