DClinPsy research conference
Researchers from across the Institute of Population Health gathered recently for the annual DClinPsy Research Conference.
The conference featured an inspiring series of talks presented by students from our Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme, the next generation of clinical psychologists.
The day was opened by Professor Ian Smith, DClin Programme Director, followed by Dr Sian Lowri Griffiths, University of Birmingham, who delivered the invited talk. Dr Griffiths’ work focuses on understanding and addressing the social determinants of mental illness which contribute to mental health inequities. She uses a wide range of approaches to understand these social complexities, such as co-production and use of large data to understand how biopsychosocial factors intersect to predispose risk to mental illness.
Students highlighted their research in a selection of parallel sessions on the following topics:
- Parenting a child with physical health difficulties
- Neurodiversity
- Mental health in context
- Professionals’ views and experiences
- Ethnicity, religion and mental health
- Children and young people
- Physical health
- Socio-affective functioning in psychopathology
- Perinatal mental health
Professor Ian Smith, DClin Programme Director said: “I was really impressed by the varied and interesting presentations. It was brilliant to see the next generation of clinical psychologists producing practical research that that has the potential to be of real benefit to services and those that use them.”
