Personal Statement

Becca Wilson is an interdisciplinary researcher with a career spanning the space, atmospheric and health sciences. She is currently a tenure track fellow at University of Liverpool developing open source software for the sharing, access and visualisation of sensitive health data. Becca leads the DataSHIELD research project and co-chairs the steering committee for the DataSHIELD open source community. DataSHIELD is scientifically and technically mature, open-source software, uniquely enabling real-time privacy-preserving and federated analysis of health and biomedical data. It has been used with real world data for over a decade. Becca is an advocate for open source software and open research through her fellowship of the UK Software Sustainability Institute and her advisory board membership of the Society of Research Software Engineers.

Alongside her research career, Becca holds significant expertise in science communication and public engagement. She is currently a member of the strategic advisory board for OKRE - a Wellcome Trust incubated organisation facilitating collaborations between the entertainment industries, media and medical research communities for accurate and compelling story telling. In 2020, Becca was named on the Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 List as one of the 100 most influential disabled people in Britain.
