Report summary
Commissioned by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in collaboration with the University of Liverpool, this research aimed to identify best practices for survivor engagement in international development policies on modern slavery from a South Asian perspective. Led by Dr Sutirtha Sahariah, an independent consultant with extensive experience in the region, the study involved interviews with experts from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, and a focus group discussion (FGD) with survivors in India.
The research highlighted the challenges of engaging survivors in South Asia, where such practices are often NGO-driven and survivors typically remain beneficiaries rather than leaders. The study focused on professionals with policy expertise to explore effective survivor engagement practices.
