Report summary
People with lived experiences of modern slavery offer vital insights into exploitation and its impacts. However, their perspectives are often missing from policy and programme development, where they are usually only asked to share their traumatic stories rather than being involved in creating solutions.
There is a growing call to meaningfully engage these individuals in the development process, yet such engagement remains inconsistent.
This research, led by the Dr Allen Kiconco & University of Liverpool in collaboration with the Modern Slavery PEC, examines how effectively people with lived experience are engaged in European anti-modern slavery policies and programmes. The report includes insights from four experts and highlights four key practices for effective engagement: recognising survivors beyond their experiences, valuing their input, involving them as partners, and integrating their engagement into mainstream processes.
