Dr Nick Martin, Lecturer in Political Theory at the University of Liverpool, was recently awarded the CRISPP Essay Prize for best article published in the 2017 volume of the Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.

The article, titled “Conceptions of the good, rivalry, and liberal neutrality”, sought to “use the idea of rivalry to derive an extensive privatization strategy by which the role of the state is minimal with respect to promoting any conception of the good.”

Dr Martin said of his paper:

In ‘Conceptions of the good, rivalry, and liberal neutrality’, I argue that if the state is to be truly neutral between the diverse views that individuals have about what a good life looks like, then it cannot only be neutral about religion. Instead, it must also be neutral between various other ways people measure their lives, including non-religious moral doctrines, careers, artistic and sporting pursuits, relationships and so on.

“Conceptions of the good, rivalry, and liberal neutrality” is free to access until the end of June 2019.
