Tony McNulty
Tony McNulty completed his B.A. in 1981, and has had an extensive career in Politics.
Tony McNulty completed a B.A (with Hons) in Political Theory and Institutions in 1981. He fondly remembers Benny Pollack (Chile), Michael Laver (Politics) and Jo Femia (Gramsci) – as well as Uncle Fred Ridley (Public Admin) and David Morgan (US) – and has enormously positive memories of both the department and the city. He ended up with a 2:1 and then went on to do a M.A in pre-doctoral research methods at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in the US through the connections of David Morgan.
Tony later stumbled into academic via various research and teaching posts at North London, Central London and Kingston Polytechnics and then went into politics as a practitioner – first as a local councillor 1986-1997 and then as an MP from 1997-2010. After serving in numerous ministerial positions in departments as varied as the Home Office, DWP, Transport, and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister - he ended up attending Gordon Brown’s cabinet as Minister for Employment and Minister for London. Quite a journey from the Roxby Building by day to the cabinet table via variously the Silver Sands, Yoruba or Gladray clubs at night!
He then settled back into academia after losing the 2010 election and did another MA – this time in Political Journalism at City University. Then read for a PhD in Politics at Queen Mary, University of London where he has ended up teaching UK, US, and European politics. Now settling for quieter life describing and analysing how and politics happen in the way that they do rather than being in the middle of it all as an MP or minister.
