Luca Ciesco
Luca Ciesco studied up until his Master of the Arts with us and now worked as a Democratic Services Officer.
I graduated with a 2:1 degree in History with Politics, followed by a Master of Arts in Contemporary European Politics, where I earned a Merit. My education gave me a solid understanding of the UK political system, which has been incredibly valuable in my current role as a Democratic Services Officer.
Throughout my studies, I gained a deep understanding of how political systems operate and the historical context behind them. This knowledge is crucial in my day-to-day work, where I help ensure the smooth running of local government meetings, assist elected officials, and work to keep the democratic process transparent and accessible to the public. My role involves a mix of administrative tasks, guiding procedures, and actively supporting the council’s operations—all of which draw on the skills I developed during my degree.
One of the most important skills I picked up during my studies was research, both quantitative and qualitative. This has been vital in my job, where I analyse data, prepare reports, and provide recommendations that help the council make informed decisions. The ability to conduct thorough research and present clear, evidence-based arguments has been key to my success in this role.
A highlight of my academic journey was my master’s dissertation, which focused on anti-Thatcher sentiment in Liverpool during the 1980s. I explored the city’s tense relationship with the central government, particularly through the lens of the Militant tendency and Derek Hatton’s involvement. This research gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges and conflicts that can arise in local politics—insights that are directly relevant to my work today.
I’m really enjoying my role as a Democratic Services Officer. It’s rewarding to apply the skills and knowledge I gained during my studies to support local democracy and contribute to effective governance. My education has provided me with the tools I need to navigate the complexities of local government, and I’m grateful for how well it has prepared me for this job.
