Physics Teaching at the University of Liverpool

Undergraduate programmes

The Department of Physics offers a flexible suite of undergraduate taught degree programmes. These allow you to pursue physics to the highest level and ensure excellent opportunities for careers in industry, computing, finance and research. Whilst each degree programme will begin with a foundation of fundamental concepts, an increasing range of optional modules exist as the years progress, allowing you to tailor the programme to your individual needs and developing interests.

The following is a short guide to help you choose between the different programmes. Transferring between degree programmes is also possible.

Why Physics BSc?

Physics is the fundamental science that covers the smallest to the largest scales and by studying it we have made everything from the microchip to space flight possible. With a physics degree you will have the skills to understand, take measurements, make predictions and create new methods in any walk of life you chose to go into (see employment areas above). All of our existing degree programmes are IOP accredited and cover the core of Physics used in all areas of research. Students can undertake individual or group project work on this degree programme.

Why Physics MPhys?

If you want to go deeper into the current research side of Physics and continue with a Physics related career then this degree programme is for you. The additional year will give you a flavour of how research is done and much more detail on the state of the art in our research areas. Student projects are often individual but always within one of our  groups.

Why Physics and Astronomy BSc?

If you want the unique opportunity to learn with an excellent astrophysics group from Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Liverpool department of Physics. The astronomy uses and studies all of the same physics, using the universe as the laboratory. Students will attend the fieldclass in Tenerife to use a telescope and can undertake individual or group project work on this programme.

Why Astrophysics MPhys?

As Physics MPhys, but with a bias toward astrophysics research. Students will go on a fieldclass to Tenerife to use a telescope and projects are often individual but always within one of our research groups.

Why Physics with Medical Applications BSc?

This is a full physics degree with a final year project with medical physicists who are linked to the Clatterbridge Oncology Centre or Royal Liverpool Hospital. The specific modules teach you how radiation therapy and many imaging techniques can be used to understand and treat patients.

Why Physics with Nuclear Science BSc?

This is a physics degree with a specialism in nuclear science and technology, with a project with our nuclear group or one of our commercial partners around radiation in the environment.

Our existing Physics degree programmes are accredited by the Institute of Physics, these include the joint honours courses with Physics.
