Work Experience

Work experience is a valuable part of everyone’s employment journey. The physics department at the University of Liverpool runs a week-long summer placement scheme (typically in June) for Year 12 students interested in studying physics.

Applications for the 2025 scheme will open in January. Please contact the Physics Work Experience Team at physics.workexp@liverpool.ac.uk to find out more about how to apply. Read on below to find out what students got up to in our 2024 work experience scheme.

Work Experience 2024

At the beginning of June, the Department of Physics hosted 27 A-level students for a week-long work experience placement. The students, who travelled in from both the city region and from much further afield, spent the week gaining experience in what it’s like to study physics at the University of Liverpool and what a career in research might look like.

On the first day the students had a series of talks covering a range of research topics (Accelerator Physics, Medical Physics, Astrophysics, Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Particle Physics), and took part in hands-on team building challenges and activities.

The students then spent the next few days with the various research clusters based at the University of Liverpool. This included an introduction to experimental Nuclear Physics, a taster of muon and neutrino physics, and an overview of condensed matter physics along with a hands-on workshop using a scanning electron microscope. During the week the students had many opportunities to view the teaching and research facilities at the University of Liverpool, before taking a trip on the Friday to tour the particle accelerator located just down the road at Daresbury laboratory.
