Celebrating 30 Years of JUAS: A Milestone in Accelerator Science Education
The Joint Universities Accelerator School (JUAS) celebrated its 30th anniversary on 27 November 2024 at CERN's Science Gateway. Since its inception in 1994, JUAS has empowered over 1,400 students with advanced knowledge in particle accelerator science and technology, many of whom have continued their careers in leading laboratories, industry, and academia.
In 2011, the University of Liverpool joined JUAS as a partner university, strengthening its commitment to excellence in accelerator science education. Professor Carsten P Welsch, Head of Accelerator Science at the University, has been a member of the JUAS Advisory Board since that time, contributing significantly to the school's strategic direction and growth. He was invited to speak at the CERN event about accelerator science education in the UK, putting Liverpool’s and the Cockcroft Institute’s structured training into an international context.
"Being part of JUAS has been an incredible journey," said Professor Welsch. "Our collaboration has opened doors for our students to engage with world-class experts and cutting-edge research. We are proud to contribute to JUAS's legacy of fostering innovation and international collaboration."
The anniversary event brought together alumni, faculty, and industry leaders for a day of reflection and networking. A real highlight was the launch of the JUAS book, a comprehensive four-volume introduction to the science and technology of particle accelerators.
The book is now available in open-access format and can be accessed via the following link: https://doi.org/10.23730/CYRSP-2024-003
Happy birthday, JUAS!
