The Liverpool Quasicrystal Group organised a one-day workshop focused on the surface properties of intermetallic compounds. This event formed part of the annual activities of the Research and Activity Domain (RAD) on Atomic Scale Surfaces, Functional Coatings, Thin Films, and Interfaces (ASCI) under the European Integrated Centre for the Development of Metallic Alloys & Compounds (ECMetAC). Dr Hem Raj Sharma and Prof Ronan McGrath, both from the University of Liverpool, serve as spokesperson for the ECMetAC ASCI RAD and Secretary-General of ECMetAC, respectively.

The workshop covered the surface properties of a wide range of intermetallic compounds, including quasicrystals, shape memory alloys, high-entropy alloys, and intermetallic catalysts. Dr Hem Raj Sharma, alongside his PhD students Liam Chandler and Ahowd Alfahad from the University of Liverpool, presented their research. The event was attended by researchers from various European institutes within ECMetAC, and external invited speakers.

During his closing remarks, Dr Julian Ledieu, CEO of ECMetAC and a Liverpool PhD alumnus, stressed the importance of such workshops in fostering research collaboration. He encouraged young researchers to take advantage of the Young Researchers Exchange Scheme for short-term research visits to ECMetAC member institutes.

ECMetAC comprises 220 scientists, including around 130 permanent researchers or professors, 50 PhD students, and 40 post-docs from 21 high-level laboratories and one SME across thirteen different European countries.
