Run the Length of the Future Circular Collider: A Virtual Fitness Challenge!

The Department of Physics is excited to announce the initiative, “Run the Length of the Future Circular Collider,” a virtual fitness challenge designed to inspire both body and mind. This unique event blends fitness with the fascinating world of particle physics, making it the perfect opportunity for anyone eager to improve their health while exploring groundbreaking scientific research.

The Challenge

The Future Circular Collider (FCC), a visionary project currently being designed to follow the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is set to be the next giant leap in particle physics. With a proposed circumference of an incredible 91 kilometres, the FCC would be nearly four times larger than the LHC, pushing the boundaries of what we know about the universe.

Participants of the virtual challenge are invited to run or walk the 91 kilometres at their own pace, starting October 1st and continuing through October 31st, 2024. The event is accessible to all, allowing runners and walkers to complete the distance from wherever they are while learning about the exciting research and innovation driving the creation of the FCC.

Participating in this challenge boosts your fitness while offering a chance to explore how particle accelerators, like the Future Circular Collider, unlock the universe's secrets. You'll also join a global community celebrating the scientific breakthroughs that could revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos.

Everyone who completes the challenge will receive a commemorative certificate by email, and participants can also order a special medal for £15 to mark their achievement.
