Student profile: Haysam Shakeel

Our students talk about their experiences at the University of Liverpool.

Why did you choose to study Philosophy at the University of Liverpool?

It was a personal interest primarily. Philosophy is not the most accessible discipline outside of university, so I believed this course would give me a solid opportunity to broaden my understanding and knowledge of the areas I found particularly interesting.

What do you enjoy most about the course, and why?

Quality of lectures and seminars are outstanding – the curriculum offers something for everyone.

Can you tell us about an exciting project you have completed on your course?

First Year – Essay on induction - ‘Can I know that the sun will rise tomorrow’.

What does Liverpool have to offer as a city?

Ideal student city. Main part of town is a 10-minute walk from campus and has everything you want. Lovely and friendly people as well.

Can you tell us about the teaching methods/how your learning has been facilitated?

A lot of independent study but a typical week consists of lectures, seminars and workshops. Speaking with professors outside contact hours is very easy and helpful.

What extra-or co-curricular activities do you take part in, and how do these affect your student experience?

As the 1st Team Head Coach of University of Liverpool Football Club, a lot of my time is spent at the University’s sports facilities at Wyncote. Being part of football at Uni has been fundamental to my university experience; it's given me an opportunity to work with some very talented people.

What are your ambitions for the future and how will your experiences at the University of Liverpool help you in your future career?

UoL has given me a platform to explore several opportunities after I graduate, from coaching football to a career in law.

If you could go back, what advice would you have given yourself before going to University?
