PhD researcher, Lauren Stephens, begins her Open Eye Gallery Residency
Current PhD student Lauren Stephens has joined Open Eye Gallery as a Philosopher in Residence. Open Eye Gallery is the UK’s national lead on socially engaged photography and often sponsors artists in residence ranging from photographers to poets. Inspired by Yiota Vassilopoulou’s 2013-15 Philosopher in Residence position at Bluecoat Gallery, Lauren successfully approached Open Eye Gallery to sponsor a philosopher in residence for 2023.
This residency will focus on the power of socially engaged art, asking questions such as ‘How can art be an agent for social change?’ and ‘What is the role of the activist in art?’ Throughout the year, Lauren will write articles published through Open Eye Gallery’s website and the Socially Engaged Photography Network. Her first article, ‘Photo Ethics with Open Eye Gallery: What is the Role of Social Documentary Ethics in 2023?’ is available here.
