Two SOTA300 Work Placement Awards for Philosophy
Two Philosophy students scooped this year’s prize for ‘best work placement’ on the SOTA300 module. Ashleigh Huntsman and Sophie Greener, were dual winners for their unique placements, both making a measurable impact to their communities.
Ashleigh completed her placement at Collective Encounters, an arts organisation based in Liverpool who specialise in theatre for social change, engaging those on the margins of society telling untold stories and tackling the local, national and international concerns of our times. Ashleigh’s role was to work with vulnerable adults during the preparations for the performance ‘In Our Times’ where she would gather marketing material to promote the show. Ashleigh experienced enormous success, creating a social media storm with her story being shared widely on Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn, as well as a blog post which was published on the University website.
Sophie’s dream is to become a weather presenter. With limited opportunities to gain experience in Liverpool, Sophie decided to start up her own weather channel, a first for SOTA! Weather with a Smile is hosted on Facebook and is specifically tailored to UoL students including tips for travelling around campus and what to take to exams! This innovative opportunity was facilitated by collaboration with Prof Andy Morse in Meteorology for the technical weather information, and Dr Kerry Traynor in Communications and Media for the expertise in audio visual equipment. Sophie’s excellent performance on placement was matched with her academic grades, receiving the highest mark overall in the SOTA300 cohort.
