Spine Building with the city of Liverpool behind it

An introduction from the director, Professor Tom Solomon, CBE

"We are seeking to create a step-change in how the world prepares for, responds to, and recovers from pandemic threats.

Centred in Liverpool, The Pandemic Institute draws on a unique partnership between the academic sector, health care community and civil society. Our work takes advantage of decades of research on emerging infections, as well as the city’s pioneering work during COVID-19. This includes the world’s first city-wide mass testing for COVID-19; leading an influential national study of hospitalised patients that first identified the risk factors for severe disease; and a ground-breaking clinical trials platform that sped up the development of new drugs.

Building on this, and working with its international partners, The Pandemic Institute will catalyse our ability to spot the emergence of threats, accelerate how we test and treat diseases, and prevent them having such a devastating effect on every aspect of our lives.

The next pandemic may be around the corner. We were not ready in 2020, but with your support The Pandemic Institute will help ensure we are next time.”
