Julien Smeets

Born in Verviers (Belgium), Julien Smeets graduated 2008 in Engineering at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Ecole Centrale Paris through the double degree program of the TIME network, with specialization in Medical Physics, Radioprotection and Nuclear Engineering. He additionally earned the master of Applied and Fundamental Physics from Université Paris-Sud XI in Orsay.
From 2008, he was an FNRS research fellow at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, investigating, in collaboration with IBA, their original idea of in vivo range verification in proton therapy by means of prompt gamma imaging. In 2012, he completed both his PhD thesis and the Complementary Master in Management from Solvay Brussels School and joined the research team of IBA to further develop prompt gamma imaging as part of the Envision EU FP7 project. In collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, XGLab, Université de Lyon, iMagX, WOW and RSI, the IBA research team developed the first two clinical Prompt Gamma Camera prototype systems, already under evaluation within research programs led by the Universitäts Protonen Therapie Dresden at OncoRay and the Roberts Proton Therapy Center in Philadelphia.
He is now working as Research Project Manager at Ion Beam Applications SA.
