Macramé

Learn some of the basic techniques of the art of knotting cord in patterns to make decorative items.

While the iconic potholders of the 1970s are what often come to mind when thinking of macramé, references to macramé can be found as early as the 13th century. In modern history, macramé originates from Arabic countries where knotting techniques were used to finish the edges of tapestries, rugs and shawls.

Macramé knots are typically created with just hands. If you're interested in learning some of the basic techniques of macramé, we're running a series of workshops where you can experiment, explore your creativity and make artistic and functional items.

Each workshop will be standalone with no previous experience required, although repeat attendance will help you build your skills and confidence.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced crafter, we'll provide a relaxed environment where we can switch off from the demands of everyday life and lose yourself in structured creativity alongside other likeminded people.

Dates and times

Macramé key fobs

  • Saturday 8 February 2025, 10am-12.30pm
  • In this session, you'll be introduced to the square knot and we'll make another functional piece of art, a macramé key fob.

Macramé pot holders:

  • Saturday 8 March 2025, 10am-1pm
  • In this session, we'll go for the iconic 1970s pot holder. Using the half sinnet and square knot, we'll combine art and functionality. You'll take home a pot holder that's suitable for displaying both house and patio plants. If you have a pot in mind, bring it along so you can coordinate colours and make it the right size. Aim for a small or medium pot that’s not too heavy. Remember that whatever you're going to hang it from must be able to bear the weight of the pot, as well as the soil and plant that will be in it.

Macramé eco-air fresheners

  • Saturday 12 April 2025, 10am-1pm
  • Come learn, have fun and do your bit to save the planet! This is an opportunity to explore a few more macramé knots - the square knot, double half hitch and the raspberry knot. Mastering these will stand you in good stead to explore your creativity at home. We'll make eco air fresheners while practicing these knots. These make an easy gift for friends and family. The more you make and gift, the better for the environment, since they're reusable too.

Cost

Each session is priced at £22.50 for members and £25 for non-members.
