Biography
Luying is a singer, guitarist, and pianist who started her full-time PhD in November 2021. She has gained BA in music from Xi’an Conservatory of Music (China) and a Master's degree with Distinction from the University of Liverpool. In her Master’s research, she explored the possible methods to translate English songs into Chinese; practical outcomes include the scores with singable translation and the performance of Six Nursery Rhymes for Grown Up Children. The doctoral project expands on her previous research. It uses a practice-led research method to study Leginska’s one-act opera The Haunting, aiming to provide solutions to the challenges of translating English opera libretto into Chinese. So far, this project has identified the research gaps in related fields and finished the first translation draft. The research also considers cultural and historical context related to the opera translation, the composer, and her work in this case.
Teaching and learning
