The Department of Music is delighted to announce the first recipients of its Martha Vidor Scholarships.

The Martha Vidor Scholarships are available to UK students studying MA Music and Audiovisual Media, and MRes Music specialising in composition.

The award for MA Music and Audiovisual Media is worth £5,000, and this year’s recipient is Isaac Fowler, from the Crewe area.

“On hearing the news, I felt very excited, proud, and surprised”, commented Isaac. “I was looking forward to the course already, and being awarded the scholarship made me feel even more excited to start!

“I dream of becoming a professional media composer after graduating and the content of this course is so relevant to help make this a reality post-graduation. I am thoroughly enjoying the course so far”.

The scholarship for composers studying MRes Music – which covers the full tuition fee – was awarded to Ben Phair.

“I was extremely pleased at being awarded the Martha Vidor Scholarship as I wanted to continue to develop ideas at the postgraduate level under Ben Hackbarth, Richard Worth, and Kenneth Forkert-Smith”, said Ben, who hails from Nottinghamshire, and previously studied BA Music at Liverpool. “They always offer productive discussions, and my studying here was contingent on being awarded the scholarship.

Of his ambitions on the MRes, Ben added: “I am hoping to explore and expand on approaches to an esoteric area of music theory – microtonality – and formalise a new approach to microtonal tunings, their relationship to tonality, and synthesise them with current outmoded understandings of tonality”.

“We are delighted to offer these scholarships to composers in the Department of Music,” said Professor Lisa Colton, Head of Department. “In addition to the specialist tuition from composers on our academic staff, our postgraduate composers have opportunities to work with external musicians from organisations such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Solem Quartet, and Riot Ensemble. Student composers also benefit from networking and career support by our visiting professionals, and from participating in the dynamic concert programme at the Tung Auditorium.

“The scholarships are awarded to composers to help them to get the most out of their course, ahead of their professional creative career.”

The University of Liverpool offers a range of generous postgraduate scholarships, with a number of these dedicated specifically to Music.
