Liverpool Capital of Culture
The Beatles may be Liverpool's most famous export but the city has an enormous selection of great artists and organisations, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and to the avant-garde group Ensemble 10:10.
Music is woven into the culture and there is a massive local scene in the city's small clubs, bars and streets, with new venues popping up all the time. You can also catch top name international pop stars at the M&S Bank Arena and the O2 Academy.
Over 400 concerts and events are held annually at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. At the heart of programming by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic are about 70 concerts performed by the award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. Ensemble 10:10 became resident at the Tung Auditorium at The University of Liverpool in 2022.
2023 saw Liverpool play host to the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of our friends in Ukraine as fans and tourists flocked to the city to enjoy the party.
Each year as summer rolls around our public spaces come alive with festivities, from pop festival Sound City to Africa Oye - the UK's largest celebration of African music and culture.
It's difficult to put into words just how important music is to Liverpool and its people, so why not come and see for yourself!
A cultural hub
Liverpool has the most galleries and museums outside of London, many under the banner of National Museums Liverpool. This provides exciting opportunities for our students to create, perform and explore music in its many forms - and to gain experience within the thriving arts & media industry that has built up here.
We work closely with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic to give our students insights into the music industry, management, performance and composition, whilst our links with Sentric and Ditto provide students with real-world experience of music publishing.
Our Tate Exchange programme is an exciting opportunity to work alongside artists in a collaborative environment, with our staff and students also benefitting from free entry to all paid exhibitions at Tate Liverpool, Tate Britain and Tate Modern!
We are also proud to work alongside the UK's leading Indian Arts and Culture company, Milap who offer a fantastic programme of events across the North West.
Just a stone's throw from campus is the Everyman & Playhouse Theatre with a packed schedule of contemporary plays to get stuck into.
The Department of Music also works closely with music therapy groups and local schools on a regular basis, including working alongside Resonate and In Harmony Liverpool, embracing the community spirit that makes Liverpool such a vibrant place to live.
