Student Experience
We may be big (1700+ student doctors strong) but it doesn't feel like it. At Liverpool you'll find a tight-knit community of colleagues for life, bound together by big ambitions, shared interests and a fair amount of fun.
As part of your studies you'll have the chance to get involved in a wide variety of activities, from clinical learning opportunities on placement, to making advances in medical research and, of course, some really knock-out extra-curricular sporting, social and society based activities.
Medical student societies
The impressive number of student societies led by student doctors is something that really makes Liverpool stand out from the crowd and is always amongst our students' highlights of their time with us as they set off for clinical practise. Plus, we're also home to the UK's oldest and largest medical student society - Liverpool Medical Students Society (LMSS)!
Whether you are looking to deepen your knowledge and network in a particular medical specialty, rally around a cause or simply meet friends and develop hobbies outside of Medicine, our student societies have a lot to offer!
Clinical research opportunities
At Liverpool you benefit from being part of an extensive NHS network that spans a number of best-in-class specialist sites across the North West. With this, comes plenty of opportunities to collaborate with expert clinicians on research in their own medical areas or even spearhead your own projects. Year on year, we have students whose work is published in prestigious medical journals and who are invited to present their studies at academic conferences up and down the country and beyond!
Tailored support
All of this is underpinned by bespoke academic, careers and wellbeing support with options for 1-on-1 appointments, small group learning sessions and a wealth of helpful resources available on the School's student intranet.
Academic Advisors
Students are matched with an Academic Advisor who they meet with regularly in support of their academic progress and personal development. The Advisors are really important points of reference for students and help with goal setting, growing skills and networks and providing advice and support in a number of areas. They are a great first port of call!
Careers guidance
The School has its own dedicated careers advisor delivering individual careers appointments as well as resources and activities which allow students to explore the broad range of employment opportunities that follow a Liverpool MBChB degree. Events such as Careers Fairs showcase consultants and trainees in over 60 specialties, offering exclusive access to expert clinicians to discuss potential career opportunities.
Wellbeing and mentoring
Settling into University life is exciting and not without its challenges. Add studying Medicine to the mix and it's perfectly reasonable to expect to need a helping hand, or a listening ear, from time to time.
The University's Student Services team are available to offer support with studies, health and wellbeing, financial advice and more. On top of this, the School also benefits from its own Student Support and Wellbeing team - uniquely positioned to support with the unique experience of being a student doctor. The team operates an open door policy, ensuring all students can access the appropriate support whenever needed.
To help you feel at home right from the start, the School's Peer Mentor Network pairs up Year 1 students with experienced student doctors in later years to help them settle into their studies and the student community here at Liverpool.
Working together
We love working with students to continuously optimise the course and implement positive changes to ensure the student experience goes from strength to strength.
Student feedback is gathered regularly as part of the formal quality assurance of our educational provision. We manage action plans in response to this through our Quality Assurance Group and in close liaison with our education providers. What that looks like in practice is plenty of opportunities for students to share input through curriculum and placement evaluations, focus groups, sessions and the student representative scheme to help shape their experience.
The School holds regular Staff-Student Liaison Committee meetings attended by student representatives who have an important role in collaborating with Year Directors and other members of the senior leadership team to implement new initiatives, developing important leadership and management skills in the process.
