Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust provides the full range of acute inpatient, outpatient, day case, and emergency services to the local communities of St Helens, Knowsley, Halton, Southport, Ormskirk and Liverpool, extending to over four million people including the whole of Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and the Isle of Man with the regional Burns and Plastic Surgery and Spinal Injuries units.
The Trust is the only acute Trust in Cheshire and Merseyside, and one of the few in England, to achieve the rating of ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

Placement opportunities
Students have supported access to the hospital environment and learning opportunities. In addition, within the Education and Training Centre, Nightingale House, students have a dedicated common room with swipe card access and 24/7 access to the Library.
Facilities in Nightingale House include a the student common room, lecture theatre, seven seminar rooms, computer centre, four clinical skills rooms and two simulation suites.
Clinical skills provision
The undergraduate team aim to map all the learning objectives with the learning opportunities available across the Trust. Clinical skills sessions are organised as appropriate.
Students are encouraged to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team. They receive teaching:
- From the medical education pharmacist (CP3/CP4/CP5)
- Attend laboratory sessions (CP2/CP3)
- Phlebotomy clinics (CP3/4)
- Work alongside radiographers (CP2), dieticians (CP2), Cardio-respiratory technicians (CP2/CP3), physiotherapists/occupational therapists (CP2), endoscopy nursing staff (CP2/CP3/CP4) and specialist nurses (CP2/CP3/CP4).
We provide a great deal of bedside teaching (CP2/CP3/CP4) with our Undergraduate skills tutors and Education fellows which always receives excellent feedback from our students.
To complement and support learning outcomes, frequent and structured bedside teaching is delivered by our undergraduate skills tutors and education fellows (CP2/CP3/CP4).
