Specialist clinical teaching

Liverpool’s School of Medicine is ideally located for access to some of the UK’s leading specialist clinical units. Students will have the advantage of being taught by clinical experts in hospitals such as Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, and The Walton Centre, the UK’s only specialist hospital trust dedicated to neurological services.

Students also benefit from teaching and research links with the Institute of Tropical Medicine, the Linda McCartney Centre, and St Paul’s Eye Unit.

Primary care is a key focus of our MBChB curriculum. As well as community and General Practice placements, students benefit from regular small group classroom-based teaching throughout the course, led by General Practitioners within the Faculty. This supports an understanding of the impact of care delivery, for both patient and practitioner.

  • Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool provides acute and ongoing healthcare to approximately 350,000 people in North Merseyside and the surrounding areas.

  • Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is a major national children’s hospital in the UK and teaching hospital affiliated to Liverpool’s School of Medicine.

  • Blackpool Teaching hospital provides services across the Fylde coast, Lancashire and south Cumbria, area that is home to 1.6 million people. 

  • Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust provide mental health and intellectual disability psychiatry services in both community and in-patient settings, principally across Cheshire and Wirral.

  • The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s leading cancer centres providing highly specialist cancer care to a population of 2.4m people across Cheshire and Merseyside.

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust comprises a large District General Hospital and an Intermediate Care Service at Ellesmere Port Hospital.

  • Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust specialises in secure, perinatal, inpatient and community mental health and learning disability services, including services for children & young people.

  • Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital provides specialist services in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, respiratory medicine including adult cystic fibrosis and diagnostic imaging, both in the hospital and out in the community.

  • The Liverpool Women’s NHS Trust is a one of the largest maternity and gynaecology units in the UK, with approximately 8,500 babies born each year.

  • Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust provides the full range of acute inpatient, outpatient, day case, and emergency services to the local communities of St Helens, Knowsley, Halton, Southport, Ormskirk and Liverpool.

  • Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest trusts providing physical health and mental health services in the North West. They offer specialist inpatient & community services as well as learning disability, addiction & brain injury services.

  • Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals provide healthcare in hospital and in the community to 260,000 people across Southport, Formby and West Lancashire.  

  • (LUHFT) comprises of Aintree Hospital, the Royal Liverpool Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, and Liverpool University Dental Hospital; which provide a full range of services, across acute medicine, A&E, acute frailty units, rehabilitation services, dental services and surgical services.

  • The Walton Centre is the only specialist hospital trust in the UK dedicated to providing comprehensive neurology, neurosurgery, spinal and pain management services.

  • Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WHH) serves residents across Halton and Warrington boroughs. Services are provided at two hospital sites and various community locations. 

  • Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust comprises Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge Hospitals and the Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital.
