On Saturday 22nd March, the Liverpool Future Surgeons Conference brought together aspiring surgeons for a day filled with inspiring talks and interactive workshops at Aintree University Hospital. Student Doctors and Conference Chairs Pakhi Goel and Anjali Cyril tell us all about this fantastic multi-society collaboration.
Organised by a dedicated team of students from six surgical societies at the University of Liverpool - Liverpool General Surgical Society, Surgical Scousers, NeuroSoc, Orthopaedics and Trauma Society, LivPlast, and Liverpool ENT Society - the conference provided a unique platform for students to engage with leading surgeons, develop essential surgical skills, and network with like-minded peers.
Meet the team behind the conference:
- Conference Chairs: Pakhi Goel & Anjali Cyril
- Workshops Team: Daniel Vickars, Noor Kaur & Afnan Khan
- Oral & Poster Presentation Team: Kathryn Orobosa-Ogbeide & Bossy Farag
- Social Media Team: Sophia Esteban & Shuruthikka Thayanandhasivam
- Speaker Coordination: Akash Thumbe & Anjali Sreevalsan
- Finance Team: Lea Khoo, Saniya Ansari, Kasraa Mohammadi & Shree Bhattacharjee
The conference featured interactive workshops, including virtual reality surgical simulations (VRiMS) and suturing workshops led by LivMaxFax members, providing attendees with invaluable hands-on experience.
Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to hear from renowned consultant surgeons, including School Alumnus and Consultant General Surgeon Mr John Taylor, as well as gain insights into the Core Surgical Training (CST) pathway and how to build a surgical portfolio that sets you apart from the crowd.
The overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees reflected the success of the event, with students describing it as “My first conference, it was brilliant!”, “extremely informative and provided me with the knowledge to begin building my surgical portfolio!” and many more!
The conference provided a platform for students to present their research, with outstanding contributions recognised in the Oral and Poster Presentation competitions:
Oral Presentation Winner
Ramya Sithu Ganesh Babu for her presentation on ‘Assessing the necessity of Post-Adenotonsillectomy Follow-Up in a Tertiary Centre: A Comparison with National Guidelines’.
Poster Presentation Winner
Praveena Sekar for her presentation on ‘Timing of Antenatal Steroids in Threatened Pre-term Labour: A retrospective audit of tPTL assessment in the Maternity Assessment Unit’.
The Liverpool Future Surgeons Conference 2025 was a great success, leaving attendees motivated and better equipped to embark on their surgical careers. We look forward to seeing future events like LFSC to help inspire more surgeons in the making!'
