The stage was set, the sequins sparkled, and the competition for the glitterball trophy was in full swing at this year’s LMSS and Artefacts Strictly Come Dancing, all in support of two incredible charities. We caught up with LMSS Charity Reps Jessica Longden and Katie Maxwell, who shared their highlights from the unforgettable night.
On Saturday, 18th January 2025, the magnificent St George’s Hall provided the perfect backdrop for an evening of sensational dance routines, live music, and a judging panel full of familiar faces. The medical school community came together to cheer on six talented couples who lit up the stage with their captivating performances.
This year’s event was bigger and better than ever, raising an impressive £2,454 for Claire House Children’s Hospice and The Brain Charity, surpassing last year’s total.
Dean of the School of Medicine, Professor Scott, who joined the judging panel, said:
The standard of dancing this year was amazing! The music was fantastic, and everything was so well organised. The whole night was a great treat for everyone there, and you should all be really proud!
A Glittering Performance
The glitterball trophy was awarded to Will Earp (5th Year) and Liv Heron (4th Year) for their incredible routine to Proud Mary. The winners were determined by who raised the most money in the voting period on the night, making their victory not just a celebration of dance but also of generosity. Reflecting on the night, Will said:
The whole night was class; it was so fun to see everyone’s performances. I’m really thankful to Liv for coming up with the whole routine and somehow teaching me how to dance. It was great to see so many of our mates there, and, of course, it was amazing to win and raise so much money for great causes.
Liv added:
I had such a fun time choreographing and rehearsing for Strictly, with the highlight of course being winning the trophy! Thank you so much to everyone who came to support/voted for us and to Will for being so keen in every rehearsal.
The judging panel featured Professor Hazel Scott, Justin Shanahan, LMSS President Maddie Upham, and Artefacts Presidents Kieran Banner and Emily Dean. Professor Scott and Justin also received special recognition for their years of dedication to the Strictly charity event, LMSS and Artefacts.
A Night to Remember
The evening was expertly hosted by Jess Longden and Katie Maxwell (both 4th Years). As well as keeping the energy high in the room, they got to live out their Strictly presenting dreams – watch out, Tess and Claudia!
The stunning performances from all 6 couples made the night truly special:
Ed (1st Year) & Cora (2nd Year)
Saran (2nd Year) & Maisie (1st Year)
Millie (3rd Year) & Eva (1st Year)
Ali (4th Year) & Beth (3rd Year)
Lydia (4th Year) & Lucy (3rd Year)
Will (5th Year) & Liv (4th Year)
Live music was provided by the incredible Artefacts Band, conducted and directed by Dan Lam and Sophie Crawford. The audience was also treated to a performance from the upcoming Artefacts Musical: Shrek!, featuring Abby, Alex, and Chinonso as Fiona, Shrek, and Donkey.
Beyond the performances, attendees heard moving speeches from Emma and Liam from Claire House and Esme from The Brain Charity, who shared insights into the invaluable work their charities do. Both charities are interested in connecting with students interested in volunteering or learning more about how they can help.
With a packed audience of over 270 people, this unforgettable evening was a testament to the talent, dedication, and generosity of the LMSS and Artefacts communities. A huge thank you to everyone who participated, attended, and donated—your support made a real difference to two fantastic causes.
As for next year? Well, the bar has been set high, but we can’t wait to see what’s in store!
