The School of Medicine hosts Applicant Discovery Day
We were delighted to welcome a number of our medicine offer holders and their guests to participate in our Applicant Discovery Day.
Each year we select students of excellent potential and many of the applicants have received multiple offers. Our Applicant Discovery Activities (ADA) are used to showcase what Liverpool can offer in terms of an excellent medical education and wider student life. Previous feedback indicates that the activities are important in reassuring applicants they are making the right choice for their future studies. They also greatly appreciate the opportunity to speak to our students.
Applicant activities included an online webinar. This provided detailed information on the medicine programmes. We were joined by representatives from some of our medical student societies who provided an engaging and enthusiastic insight into their societies. It is hoped this event highlighted how supportive, inclusive, and welcoming we are as a School and the opportunities societies can offer.
The sun was shining for the on-campus part of our applicant activities and this no doubt helped our offer holders, and their guests, see our facilities at their best. It may have also added to the sense of excitement and enthusiasm felt by all involved.
Planning for the webinar and on-campus event started in September 2023. The on-campus event is based on student-led tours and utilises in-person contact and videos, which allows us to both accommodate and meet the needs of a large number of visitors to the School.
We sincerely thank the Communication team for their support in producing a number of informative and high-quality videos that updated our ADA content.
Offer holders and their guests were escorted on tour by our student doctors to see our facilities and hear how Case Based Learning and simulation is used to develop learning and understanding. Our offer holders then viewed the Clinical Skills Resource Centre and HARC, whilst the guests enjoyed a tour which included filmed presentations from our Dean, Professor Hazel Scott, and information from our wider staff on quality assurance, the Academic Advisor programme, assessment, wellbeing and how our Clinical Sub-Deans support the placements and learning of our students at both the Walton Centre and Alder Hey.
After enjoying refreshments, offer holders and their guests finished their tour in the Sherrington foyer. They chatted to students from years 1-5, Professor Scott, and a range of staff, including representation from CCP, Intercalation, TEL, Assessment, Wellbeing and CCT, and an A101 drop-in session was led by Dr Neil Henney.
Visitor comments were extremely positive, informing us how impressed they were with the opportunities for seeing parts of the School that were unavailable on Open Days, and the organisation and content of the tours.
Video content would be accessible to offer holders after the event and the Central team reported a high volume of requests for this additional resource; an indication that our efforts were appreciated.
Most importantly, we received a number of comments on the friendliness of our student doctors and staff. Success relied on the enthusiasm, knowledge and professionalism of our student doctors and we sincerely thank them.
A very big thank you to all who helped prepare and deliver this well-received event. We hope it does indeed help our offer holders to make an informed decision about their future education.
