The Liverpool Medical Students’ Society (LMSS) welcomed the return of their Ordinary Meetings with an incredible talk from Sports & Exercise consultant Dr Nigel Jones, discussing his remarkable career and inspiring the next generation of student doctors to follow in his footsteps.
Dr Nigel Jones’ talk, ‘A Career in Sports Medicine’, covered his career journey so far, starting here at the University of Liverpool School of Medicine. For budding sports medics in the audience, it was a fascinating insight into his journey from medical school to sports medicine, with some useful tips on experiences and qualifications that can help along the way.
Throughout his career, Dr Jones has held a variety of positions, including roles at Liverpool FC, head Doctor at Rugby England and Chief Medical Officer at British Cycling. LMSS President, Ella Bleasdale, said:
“It was incredibly inspiring to hear about his achievements at these high-level sport teams and the anecdotes he told from these experiences showed the real privileges of working within sports."
Ella continued: "Despite the glamour, sports medicine can be a tough career; Dr Jones was very open and honest about these challenges but the highlight for me was his enthusiasm and evident passion for the career he has."
The LMSS host three Ordinary Meetings over the course of the academic year in which three different guest speakers are invited to give an engaging talk about themselves, their career or a topic of their choice. Previous guest speakers include Dr Colm O’Mahoney, Professor Calum Semple and Professor Tom Solomon.
The next Ordinary Meeting will host LMSS Honorary President Professor Louise Kenny in February for her presidential address. The final Ordinary Meeting of the year is going to be delivered by three junior doctors at various stages in their training who will be speaking about their experiences with F3 years, GP and core specialty training.
