Congratulations to Maria Hanif on her success in The Wolfson Foundation intercalated degree awards.
Maria will be intercalating on the Clinical Sciences MRes programme and conducting a research project on Paediatric Lupus.
Each year the School of Medicine is invited to nominate up to 3 outstanding Liverpool student doctors, each with a quality scientific project for consideration for the National Wolfson Intercalated award.
“In my intercalation project I will be looking at a ‘treat to target’ approach for patients with JSLE (juvenile onset of systemic lupus erythematosus).”
"Patients will be given treatment for their lupus, for example corticosteroids, until a target level of the disease has been reached. Treat to target’ is already being done in the adult population, therefore my task will be to perform a data analysis from patients’ data to support a clinical trial, allowing this to be implemented in the paediatric population.”
“I'm very excited for my intercalated year as an opportunity to learn new skills and meet other researchers in the field.”
“I decided to intercalate after working with my supervisor in third year on a similar project during RS3, which really interested me. I also thought this was a good way to gain a greater understanding of research and what a career involving that would look like and to hopefully have a positive impact on patients’ lives by reducing their disease burden.”
Choosing to intercalate is a great way to enhance your undergraduate medical studies and delve deeper into a specialism that interests you. Intercalation offers you the chance to earn an additional degree by studying a year-long course during your time on the MBChB Programme. Learn more about intercalation. (Link)
“I'm very grateful to have been awarded the Wolfson Award… I'm very excited for the year ahead and I’m really looking forward to my intercalation!”
“The applications for both my intercalated degree and the Wolfson Award were very simple to follow and I had a lot of support from the intercalation team whenever I had any questions about the process. I would like to thank my supervisor Dr Eve Smith for her guidance during the application process.”
