Professor Scott was delighted to represent Liverpool School of Medicine at the Be Free Campaign’s inaugural Community Impact Awards recognising the inspirational work of groups, charities and individuals in the Liverpool City Region.
Founded by Student Doctor Shantanu Kundu, the Be Free Campaign is an award-winning charity that gives young people the tools to look after their mental health and wellbeing. The organisation put together the awards to celebrate the incredible work being done across the city, which is particularly worthy, not to mention challenging, considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and cost of living crisis.

With categories such as Mental Health Changemaker, Volunteering and Leadership Community Impact and Arts and Creativity Community Impact, the awards recognised some truly deserving initiatives and helped foster relationships to help take these forward within the community.
The award ceremony was held at the Isla Gladstone Conservatory to a star-studded audience including Cilla Ankrah-Lucas, governor at the University of Liverpool and one of the first black magistrates for Liverpool Crown Court. Also presenting was Merseyside Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Green and consultant paediatric and neonatal surgeon Iain Hennessey, who ventured out from the 'bat cave' of Alder Hey's Innovation Hub to proudly present the award for Innovation Community Impact.

Mr Iain Hennessey presents the Innovation Community Impact Award
On addressing the audience, Shan was keen to put Dean of the School of Medicine Professor Hazel Scott in the spotlight, who happily took up the mic to support the positive sentiments of the night, taking the opportunity to acknowledge Shan as a true ambassador for the School, the community and soon the NHS.
It was great to see so many people turn out to support CEO and Founder Shan on the night, some even travelling as far as from Dubai!
Awards presenters, and winnersall took the time to thank Shan and the organisation for putting on such a fantastic event, which really showcased the best of the Liverpool community.
Shan's mum couldn't let the evening end without presenting her own award to the event organiser, which in this case was a hard-earned box of Ferrero Rocher!
Shan says, "When I came to Liverpool, it was new, it was fresh but it felt like home. Since then, it has become my home and a city that has offered me so much. I am incredibly proud of the Be Free Campaign team for pulling off one of the biggest events recognising the Liverpool Community! We cannot wait for next year!"
Shan's mum couldn't resist congratulating him on a job well done
Congratulations to Shan, the Be Free Campaign and all of the winner and nominees for a fabulous achievement and a thoroughly heart-warming event. It is wonderful to be reminded of all the hard and important work that is going on in Liverpool, carrying on the legacy and impact of community organisations within our city.
