Liverpool Medics Cricket Team are celebrating becoming national champions this month following an outstanding performance at a recent tournament on home soil here in Liverpool.
A number of cricket teams made the trip to participate in Indoor National Association of Medical Schools (NAMS) cricket 2022, one of the biggest University-level indoor cricket tournaments out there.
Club President Student Doctor Syed Abidi says, “This is really special to us. A lot of the other teams have much more funding and sponsorship and are generally more established. We’re still a newer team by comparison, and were very much the underdogs at the tournament.
I was a really proud captain, as the team played really powerfully. It was a true team effort with an incredible passion the tournament hadn’t seen before.
Although Liverpool conceded in the first match, we went on to beat Leicester, Leeds and, finally, King’s College London to secure the title.
Facing King’s College London, who had held the title for two years in a row, was quite intimidating for the team – but we all stayed positive, passionate, and determined to win.
We now currently hold the title as the best medic’s cricket team in the country, with the potential to travel and participate in a similar tournament in Europe!”
