In June, and to close out the academic year, a whopping 22 student doctors were recognised for going above and beyond in their studies, on placement or in their extra-curricular activities with a commendation.
Year Five Student Jacob Bloye proves it's never too late to score your first commendation, as he receives his on his final rotation before graduating later this month for outstanding performance both clinically and in project for SAMP placement in Warrington's Emergency department.
Jacob says, "My SAMP has been a fantastic opportunity to explore further a specialty in which I have an interest in pursuing a future career. Warrington A&E was a great place to do this, and I feel that it has also massively helped me to prepare for F1. I was able to assess sick patients, perform many DOPS, and practice making clinical decisions with the rest of the team.
To be recognised in this way makes me feel really proud. I think if anyone deserves credit, it should be the staff of Warrington A&E for making my SAMP placement so enjoyable, helping to provide me with such rich learning opportunities, and working day in, day out to ensure they provide the best patient care possible.
They made it so easy for me to get stuck in and be a real part of the team."
The Undergraduate Education Team at Warrington were keen to pass on their congratulations to Jacob and Matthew Graham, who also received a commendation from the Emergency Department team there.
"Well done to Jacob and Matthew! Great to hear fantastic news on their progress with us at Warrington, keep up the good work and good luck with FY."
Matthew says, "I had the opportunity to conduct an audit during my time in Warrington's A&E department and feel proud to be a part of a project which will positively benefit the trust in the future."
Lauren Greasley, also in Year Five, received a commendation from Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant Mr David Melling for demonstration of exceptional compassion and empathy for patients during a busy Major Trauma week.
David says, "To see a medical student help a patient's family without being asked to and showing such compassion and empathy was amazing."
Lauren is very proud of the commendation from the SAMP placement. "My time with Mr Melling and the orthopaedic team was invaluable. Attending trauma calls meant that at times I did not have a particular role to play. Therefore I would use my initiative to communicate with patients or relatives to check if they had any needs or concerns."
Sometimes this was as simple as making a cup of tea or fetching a chair. I hope to continue providing these small but important aspects of patient care as I continue to progress in my career.
Student Doctor Denise Brown picked up a commendation this month for going above and beyond on the Pre Foundation Assistantship. Denise says, "I feel privileged to have received a commendation for my PFA placement. I really enjoyed working as part of the team and getting invaluable hands-on experience of working as an FY1 in preparation for August."
