Dean's Update | April 2022

Published on

My dog is in a huff with me. She has been used to spending her days in my study while I Zoom and she dreams and then we put the world to rights with a walk. It has been wonderful to see Cedar House full of students again and people using the garden over the past amazingly sunny April days, but the dog is not pleased that I am there.

We discussed her pretence to be my therapy dog, so as to come to next week’s Wellbeing event, but she will need to be content with her basket. I’m trying to make it up to her with longer weekend walks and wild swims.

What a wonderful display of student doctor leadership we have had this month. I really enjoyed seeing our Y1 puzzling the best approach to their Field Hospital activities, and taking it in turns to brief and direct their colleagues, and I was amazed at the co-ordination, talent and teamwork on display at our Artefacts ‘Addams Family’ musical.

Equally, we have amazing students who have led new developments to support others both at home and overseas, and research opportunities, and so many positive comments from placement colleagues about how our Year Five are using their PFA roles to transition towards the leadership and teamwork needed of FY1 doctors.

Indeed, it was good to be able to share, with the prospective students considering studying at Liverpool, how the fantastic blend of curricular and extra-curricular leadership opportunities at Liverpool enhances your future career potential.

As we begin together the final term of the academic year, I encourage you all to keep that blend alive as you work your way through assessments, complete your portfolios and assignments, and begin to look to your next year of study, or indeed your first foundation year. If there is one lesson from the past two years it is that taking time away from the books for a moment to reconnect with others, with nature, and with yourselves is a vital routine in each day.

And what better way to round off the year than by making a submission for one of our School Prize categories. It has been great to see the first entries coming in, and are a fantastic opportunity to showcase your passion and insights into a particular area of the course.
